Hello All, I have a Few NooB Questions....

i am interested in doing virtual tours of homes and offices, as well as scenic panoramas.. I understand Stitcher’s roll in doing this (i think) but i have some questions that i think the community might be of assistance with.

For some of these questions, it may be helpful to know that i run on PC, i currently use XP Pro and XP Pro 64 bit

#1 i currently have a Cannon EOS DIGITAL REBEL XTi camera body and a few lenses (just the regular lenses that come with it and also a 75-300mm i believe).. Seeing that budget is an issue (really i don’t have much of a budget at all :( ) what is the best way (cost effective should be a factor) to do 3d tours?

#2 When in stitcher, after i stitch all my images, what is the best way to render it if i wanted to do a 3d tour on a website? (this leads to Question #3)

#3 I’m not a big fan of Quick Time viewers on websites, i would much rather my scenes be viewed through a flash object..  what is the best way to achieve this? (this may change your answer to Q #2)

#4 What is the best way to render and display a panning panorama for a website (if quick time is not an option)

#5 What render method is best for what (keeping in mind that i am interested in doing 3d tours and panoramas) I am VERY new to Stitcher, but i would consider myself an extremely advanced Photoshop user.  I do see that stitcher can render to PSD, but for what i am trying to do (3d tours and panning panoramas) I’m not sure which way to render is the best (cubic, spherical, or any of the other options they have available) I do understand that the final render would need to be to something other than PSD, (or i would save to something like a JPG or TIF from photoshop once it is rendered), but i see great potential in doing some touch ups in Photoshop that i do not see available in stitcher.... which leads to the next question..

#6 do you all normally touch up each photo prior to importing them in stitcher, or after they are stitched (render to PSD from stitcher and then touch up?)?

#7 i could have sworn that i read something about Stitcher having a 64 bit version, but everywhere i look no i only see x86 (32 bit) available..  Is there (or was there) a 64 bit version available?

If for any of these answers a third party software or component is necessary please provide me with as much info on those products as possible (full name, mfg website, approx cost, etc..)

I am sure i could keep coming up with some questions, but i think once i have a little better of an understanding of the above Q’s then i may have fewer questions than i do now..

Thank you in advance!

- Chris

p.s. feel free to point me in the direction of something that would explain something to me if the resources are already out there.  I am going to go watch the videos that Autodesk provides to make sure i learn all that i can… :)

Hi Chris,

Here’s your answers!:

#1 what is the best way (cost effective should be a factor) to do 3d tours?

By “3D Tours” I presume you mean 360? If so, get the following hardware:

1. Samyang 8mm f/3.5 fisheye lens
2. Nodal Ninja 3 MKII Panoramic Head
3. Tripod with a removable pan/tilt head

You can still make 360 tours using your existing lenses but you will need to take a LOT of images to create them (approx 18-32 or so). The Samyang requires around 6-8.

#2 When in stitcher, after i stitch all my images, what is the best way to render it if i wanted to do a 3d tour on a website? (this leads to Question #3)

Spherical JPEG

#3 I’m not a big fan of Quick Time viewers on websites, i would much rather my scenes be viewed through a flash object..  what is the best way to achieve this? (this may change your answer to Q #2)

Buy a copy of Pano2VR. Import the Spherical JPEG from Stitcher into it. Export to Flash.

#4 What is the best way to render and display a panning panorama for a website (if quick time is not an option)

Flash

#5 What render method is best for what

Spherical JPEG - SMART BLEND - BICUBIC

#6 do you all normally touch up each photo prior to importing them in stitcher, or after they are stitched (render to PSD from stitcher and then touch up?)?

Sometimes, yes, no, depends…

#7 Is there (or was there) a 64 bit version available?

Ha ha - no… And I doubt there ever will be.

If for any of these answers a third party software or component is necessary please provide me with as much info on those products as possible (full name, mfg website, approx cost, etc..)

Pano2VR

Google is your friend here - I think it’s only fair you do some of the work....
