Guys...you have to realize that Combustion is not a 64bit applicaton, and therefore will not work live with a 64bit application. You have to use the Max 32bit version and it works fine. I used it just last week to paint some textures onto an object in Max. It works.

Just a test render of the model, using Combustion material in the Diffuse slot of a Mental Ray Car Paint shader

At any rate, I hope that AD adds Combustion to Max 2011 as a value-added component, the way Toxik was added to Maya 2010. It’s integration features and overall capability still make it good companion to 3ds Max. Would be nice to see it updated somewhat, but I’d much rather prefer it to added in than thrown away.

I use Combustion from the begining when they made first version…
Many people are still use this “old” and “cheap” but very simple compositing software.

From My point of view Autodesk should do next version of combustion.
They propably can still sell more copies of a new combustion 2009 or 2010 :)
becouse it still should be much cheap than Toxic or any competition software on the market.
But!
They need do a lot of improvements like to fix some issues with stability when You work on
complex scenes like 100 layers or more ( I do a lot of compositing when I have more than 100 layers, many of them are sequency, etc.)

The first of all they need to do is a 64bit compatybility
for the windows XP64 or if somebody need for Vista 64bit. I use combustion 2008 on the HP8400
workstation with 2 Xeon Intel CPU, 8GB of ram, 4x500GB SAS raid 0 striped array under windows XP64 becouse of course system can see 8GB of ram and combustion is much powerfull when is running under 64bit system, becouse of ram (under XP64 Combustion can allocate 3,7GB of ram and rest of ram is still available for any other application!!!)
I was unable to work under windows 32XP on any complex compositing in full HD format when was 500 frames long or more…
Now I have video board inside workstation ( Decklink HD2 Extreme and
I have connected HDMI 40’ sony bravia, sony broadcast SDIHD monitor and combustion works wery wery fine. It is like Flame for “poor” people but it is still very good option for small studios when You dont have
budget for Flame.
I work with Maya and Lightwave and I can’t imagine any of our productions
without combustion to day.
