Animators often do this by setting a keyframe, but you have to use it carefully (e.g. watch the tangents so the key doesn't affect other animation; don't delete it inadvertently etc.).

One thing I like to do when setting up animation controls is to use the Show Manip Default setting on the Transform node. You can find it under the Display tab in the Attribute Editor.

Ever have one of those days when you're looking for something and can't find it? We got hit with that the other day looking for the Update All/Active View preference. You know it's there and you just can't find it - maddening!

The frogpad reminded me of another cool input device I saw a couple years back - the Ergodex. This one lets you arrange the keys in any way that works best for you.
