A while back Thomas Luft created a procedural Ivy generator that worked in windows, Mac and Linux. It was a lot of fun to play with but had the limitation that you had to import and export from the major 3d applications as all the Ivy growth happened in his own app. Now thanks to Guruware there is a 3ds Max plugin that incorporates Thomas algorithms and lets you grow ivy all over your models right in the max viewport

As you can see above it looks great in the viewport. I recommend you check this out as its a lot of fun to play with and looks great. I'd just like to send out a thanks to Thomas and guruware for creating these tools.
