Start a RockBand with Harmonix
Posted: Nov 15, 2007 - 02:07 PM
Yesterday I went out to Cambridge and shot some video at Harmonix. For those of you who have not heard of the company, how about Guitar Hero and Guitar hero 2? If you haven't heard of those you might have been living under a rock. I suggest you step out and get some sun because their newest title Rock Band is set to release shortly. Anyone who wants to be a rock star, (who doesn't) but is maybe a little short on the musical talent now has a chance to get at least a taste.

I had a great time with everyone. We talked about the games and the unique vibe of a game company that is so totally dedicated to music. Its quite a thing to see people walking from one meeting to another while strumming a few notes on a guitar. It certainly seems more healthy then what I usually see which is someone frantically typing on a crack berry. Everywhere you look people have instruments of all kinds. Many of the employees are not only musicians but also play in rock bands themselves.

Its this passion for music that makes them so good at making these games. Harmonix goal in Rock Band was to give people a taste of what it is like to play on stage with friends. I can't think of too many better party game concepts. Move over karaoke. In Rock Band you can now have up to 4 people playing together (guitar, bass, drums and vocals). There are a ton of great tracks from many eras and styles of rock. Check out the site here. Just watching the homepage can keep you entertained for some time. If you are a fan stay tuned as there are many more developments coming. If you are wondering why I went down its because they use 3ds max for all their modeling and animation and are just starting the move to Motion Builder for dealing with mocap work. In the next couple weeks I'll dive into editing of this piece and when its done we'll post it here.

Can't wait for the video. I love seeing behind-the-scenes stuff from games I play.
