Quite the sight…
Author: Sebastian Sylwan
Here’s my first blog from Siggraph.

Although my focus is on film, one of my personal highlights of the show was possibly not as impressive if you didn’t quite look close enough. One might take the previous sentence as a metaphor, but it is instead meant quite literally.

To the passerby the print of Yosemite Valley that is in the west hall of the convention center, right under the restaurants was a beautifully wide and large picture and not much more, but if you looked close enough, you’d notice that the resolution of the image was such to allow to see every little detail in the image, even with a magnifying glass.

xRez (xRez) is a small company specializing in Gigapixel imagery.

You think that 4K is hard to handle? Try 150K ! The Yosemite project is the latest and most ambitious project they have embarked upon, and they have some of their pictures online.

To create this particular Image, they shot simultaneously from 9 locations, created a 3D reconstruction of the valley, and reprojected the images onto it, to create an otherwise impossible photograph, 150.000 pixels wide.

Quite a sight.
Yosemite as never seen before.
