Hair and Fur Bugs:

1) Hair renders black if system unit setup is milimeters, there are lights casting shadows, and hair is in buffer mode.

Steps:
1- Set system unit setup to “inches”.
2- Create a sphere
3- Apply a Hair and Fur modifier
4- Create a Spotlight to illuminate the hair and turn cast shadows on.
5- Render…
6- Now set system unit setup to millimeters and render again.
The hair is black. It happens in max 2008/2009 and 2009 sp1...I tested in max 8 and works fine. The shadows are causing problems as I can see.

2) Instanced geometry hair crashes max.
================================
The following procedure should lead to a max crash or a strange error message from mental ray:
1- Create a plane
2- Create a Cone
3- Apply a Hair and Fur modifier to the plane
4- In the Tools rollout, pick the cone as the instance node
5- Apply another Hair and Fur to the plane on top of the first one. Leave it as is…
6- Check if the Hair is in buffer mode in render effects panel.
7- Try to render…
If max does not crash, mental ray will render, but the message window will popup showing this error many times:
PS: Trying to make changes do the instace geometry hair after rendering (like change scale, tickness, etc.) and rendering again, will probably make max crash.
