Hi guys..
Pretty strange, i’m trying to texure my scene, all the difuse maps are in place.  (1.3 mg each approx.)

Now i want to add some spec. and bump maps (around 1 mg each) and most of the time i get the Image I/O Error..with a memory error
I’m trying to figure out why i get this message.. I have a shellac material in my scene, but i’m pretty sure it’s not that right? (it’s hidden anyway)

Some objets are even hidden, my scene is only a street ,2 walls and that’s it.. I have a hdri map ( about 5 mg) in my vray environment slot.

my pc is a dell precision 490 ( intel xeon1.6 ghz) with 3 gigs of ram, graphic card: nvidia quadro nvs 285
i’m running vista 32 bits and max9

any ideas why i get this?

thanks for your help guys!

It might be a problem with the image.  Do you have any problems opening a new file and setting up a material using those maps?  What file type are the images you are trying to use?

File type and file size might not be the issue.  What’s the resolution of these images?  Any large ones?  I’ve found that MAX has a limitation when handling large resolution images like aerial photography.  It also thows an error related to antialiasing and filtering large or several big images.

hmmm..
my maps are 3000*3000, so maybe it’s a resolution problem.. could it be? (that’s the setting i used when exporting my wireframes from texporter)
Since they’re some close up of my textures, i decided to get a nice big resolution..so that’s why they are 3000*3000

Any advices if it’s the case, on what could i do to get aroud this problem?
i tried to compress those map (jpeg and as i said about 1.3 meg each..) but didn’t solve anything..

Chris,
I just tried a new scene with some boxes and a plane, put my textures on all, and i received another message ..max will shut down ,do you want max to attempt..bla bla bla! you know the rest ;)

so my guess is probably that max can’t handle too much hi res maps..sounds strange though..

thanks for your answer..
any other advices?..i’m kind of a bit newbie on texturing

Compressing an image wouldn’t change anything.  That’s only affecting things at the storage level.  An image is still uses the same amount of memory when opened regardless of the size it is when stored.

Mind you, I don’t imagine that 3000 x 3000 res images would be an issue, unless there’s a lot of them.  I’ve got a scene using 4 9000 x 6000 res 16 bit images and it’s fine… just… as I had to resample them to a lower res to load in the first place.

I’d say 3000 x 3000 pixels is a pretty large image.  Try making it smaller, and see what happens.  If your machine doesn’t have a lot of RAM, you are limited in what you can use for resources.  Redav said he uses 9000 x 6000 images, but likely has a lot of memory to handle them.

I rarely use an image bigger than 800 x 600, unless it’s for a topo map.  If you need all the information in the map, try breaking it into four pieces and mapping it as four different textures.

Ok,
i’ve reduced some of my maps..i had to go down to 1024*1024, but no memory errors now.  i have 3 gig of ram in my pc, (well..4 but i’m still using vista 32 bits and max 9 32 bits) I never thought that my pc and max couldn’t handle 9 3000*3000 maps.. But now that my problem seems solve, it’s fine!

Now, since i’m on the textures subject..(i know i may be in the wrong section of this forum, but asking anyway!) Do you guys have any advices , here’s my question!

My camera is almost on the ground, and i’m looking at a street, How come my maps seems all blurry, even with some spec and some bump. It’s fine when i look in my mat editor, but in the scene it’s all kind of blurry, does anybody know away to fix this? is there anything else to do than to boost up my bump and spec?
i’m new to realistic textures, so any help would be great!

Thanks again, this forum rocks!

I’d suggest posting an image showing yor problem in the Materials Forum.  Start a new thread there and you’ll likely find more people to help.  And make sure to show us how things are “blurry”.
