Joe Gunn[ In conversation... ]

Joe Gunn is a senior freelance 3D artist based in New York City and has been involved in the 3D animation industry for more than 10 years. After much experience, he was discovered by Discreet, and he came to NY as the East Coast Application Specialist for Autodesk® 3ds Max® software. Although his roots in the business started in the Minneapolis, MN, he is now busy working at many different studios throughout the United States. Joe's client list includes companies such as Uncharted Territory, 1stave Machine, Eyeball NYC, Aggressive, Tronic Studios, Worlds Away, and many more. He has taught Autodesk's Master Classes, produced numerous tutorials and scripts for free (and some for purchase) and is always available to answer questions, show you a tip using Autodesk® 3ds Max® software, and to offer advice based on real experience.

With demonstrated expertise through teaching, public speaking, production, DVD training, articles and interviews, and 3D community support, Joe believes in giving back to the CG community with real production based tutorials and DVD training. He has authored 3 DVD training titles: "Hair 3ds Max Out-of-the-Box", "mental ray Studio Car Rendering", and "Cloth Beyond the Character", with a fourth title in production.

Joe has done lighting, rendering, modeling, dynamics, and worked as a TD, producing everything from print (Elemental 2 and 3), game cinematics (BioShock), commercials (Jeep), award nominated music videos (Kerli), and feature film (2012). He lives and breathes 3D. A self-proclaimed “tech-head”, Joe has a contagious enthusiasm when it comes to learning how to squeeze the maximum productivity from the latest technology. He always says, “If you don’t know, you better ask somebody!”

A conversation with Joe Gunn
 
How did you get involved with 3D computer graphics?
Joe: I got involved in 3D graphics in the late 90's while living in Minneapolis, MN.
What are some of the projects have you worked on?
Joe: I've had the opportunity to work on my amazing projects over the years. Everything from video game trailers to film. Some projects include music video "Kerli - Walking on Air" by Aggressive, "BioShock Cinematic" by EyeballNYC, and most recently "2012" by Uncharted Territory.
As an Autodesk Master, for what do you use the 3D software? (For example, character rigging, modeling, texturing, lighting etc.)
Joe: I use 3ds Max for everything. Modeling, textured, lighting, rendering, scripting, fx.
What makes this industry so exciting to you?
Joe: This industry is exciting because of the pace at which it changes. The technology in this field of art is amazing and keeps me on my toes.
Where do you see the industry going in the next five years?
Joe: That's a tough one to speculate as a lot can change in 5 years. I hope that's enough time to really say "No more Rendering". I want to do things in real time.
What words of wisdom do you have for anyone interested in entering the professional world of 3D computer graphics?
Joe: CG is changing at a rapid pace and you need to keep up with it. Use all the resources you can to develop your skills. Take what you have learned and apply it to other things; try to be innovative on your own. Don't give up because in time everything gets better.
