Ted is a well known independent 3ds Max trainer, writer, and columnist. Ted specializes in topics that enhance user productivity by teaching problem solving methods that lay the foundations for a deeper understanding of the concepts in the workflow. These methods allow a user of Autodesk® 3ds Max® software time for more important artistic decisions under tight deadlines. Ted has authored more than a dozen books on Autodesk 3ds Max. A conversation with Ted Boardman
How did you get involved with 3D computer graphics?
Ted:It all evolved from an architectural design company I had where I started using AutoCAD v1.4 in the late ‘80’s. As 3D developed I found it more useful and when 3D Studio v 1 was released I started adopting it to replace AutoShade. The rest is history, as they say.
What are some of the projects have you worked on?
Ted: The Rolling Stones Voodoo Lounge game from 1995, Autodesk 3ds Max (and VIZ) Fundamentals books from Release 2 to Release 8 for New Riders Publishing, Rendering with mental ray and 3ds Max recently, plus a number of online and DVD training materials.
As an Autodesk Master, for what do you use the 3D software? (For example, character rigging, modeling, texturing, lighting etc.)
Ted: All aspects of 3ds Max to find productive workflow techniques that help flatten the learning curve for new users.
What makes this industry so exciting to you?
Ted: I’m always on the lookout for examples of “productive” visualization. Beautiful work isn’t worth much if it’s not done cost effectively and I love to see people producing good work quickly.
Where do you see the industry going in the next five years?
Ted: …absolutely no idea.
What words of wisdom do you have for anyone interested in entering the professional world of 3D computer graphics?
Ted: Learn the solid basic concepts for both software and art so that you’ll have a stable foundation to build your own style and techniques.
