| Eric Hanson has been doing this sort of thing for a while now. I took a class from him at Gnomon. You basically use what is called DEM's (digital elevation maps) that were provided by NASA. NASA did a scan of the earth taking elevation measurments every 6-10 feet. You can take photo's or pano's from anywhere in the world, get your gps coordinates and find the DEM you need to create a displacement mesh with, then use your photo's for the texture. Or you can find a DEM site, pay the fees and get the displacements and hi res jpg's to texture with. We did everything in Maya and Mental Ray. You can pickup his Digital Sets DVD's from www.thegnomonworkshop.com He explains everything on those, very cool stuff!

| Thanks for the comments! I used a high res elevation data map and a high res satellite texture and weeks of tweaking... On www.framebox.com you can find some more details and also a short clip of this animation in full 1920x1080 resolution.

| it shows how it was done. a simple elevation map turned into a mesh. Chances are he used Dreamscape for shading. www.afterworks.com/DreamScape.asp
