Jose Sanchez
Director, Plethora Project

Jose Sanchez is an Architect, Programmer, and Game Designer based in Los Angeles, California. He is partner at Bloom Games, start-up built upon the BLOOM project, winner of the WONDER SERIES hosted by the City of London for the London 2012 Olympics. He is the Director of the Plethora Project (www.plethora-project.com), a research and learning project investing in the future of on-line open-source knowledge. The project has over 150 videos and an open-source library of code with over 700.000 completed video sessions since 2011. Today, he is an Assistant Professor at USC School of Architecture in Los Angeles. His research ‘Gamescapes’, explores generative interfaces in the form of video games, speculating in modes of intelligence augmentation, combinatorics and open systems as a design medium.

Jonathan Fawkner
VFX Supervisor

Jonathan joined Framestore in 2000 where he quickly demonstrated his talents as a compositor. He has since worked on numerous projects as Lead or Supervising compositor, including Jonathan Frake’s Thunderbirds, James McTeigue’s V for Vendetta, Kirk Jones’s Nanny McPhee, Ridley Scott’s Kingdom of Heaven, Brett Ratner’s X-Men: The Last Stand, Mike Newell’s Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Alfonso Cuarón’s Children of Men, Chris Weitz’s The Golden Compass and Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight.

As VFX Supervisor, Jonathan created a 19th Century world for Guy Richie’s Sherlock Holmes, the intricate environments and technical challenges of the Hell’s Gate sequence in James Cameron’s Avatar and breathed life into Aslan the CG lion in Michael Apted’s The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. He was also Framestore VFX Supervisor on Jonathan Liebesman’s Wrath of the Titans and a key member of the Oscar-winning team delivering Alfonso Cuarón’s Gravity. He was recently VFX Supervisor on Doug Liman’s Edge of Tomorrow, followed by Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy. Jonathan thrives on complex challenges and uses his wide-ranging skills and limitless enthusiasm to deliver original solutions.

This unparalleled fusion of stop-motion and computer graphics has garnered the studio two Oscar nominations and worldwide acclaim. In this session, Mark Shapiro will discuss the upcoming feature The Boxtrolls, using rarely seen images and timelapses. Production puppets will be on display.

MARK SHAPIRO’s diverse marketing and communications career has taken him across the United States and around the world, working in brand development, advertising, public relations, film production and writing for companies including Nike, Town & Country Magazine and Upper Deck. In 2007, he joined LAIKA, where he manages brand strategies, including the marketing efforts for LAIKA’s corporate identity as well as the company’s feature films. A native of Seattle, Washington, Mark attended Emerson College in Boston, Massachusetts and received his Bachelor of Arts in English from The Colorado College in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He also completed education studies at Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon.
