Max Creation Graph (MCG) Sample Pack for 3ds Max 2016

By Christopher Diggins - 17 Apr, 2015 - 3ds Max

Now that 3ds Max 2016 is available for download I'm pleased to announce a set of 30 sample MCG tools and 80 new compounds that you can download, use, and learn from!

In order to install the tools unzip the contents of MaxCreationGraph.zip and it into your Max Creation Group user folder. You can navigate directly to that folder by pasting
%userprofile%/Autodesk/3ds Max 2016/Max Creation Graph
into your Windows explorer.

If you have any other compounds and tools installed, be sure to back them up first, in case some files in the zip package have the same name as existing files. When you restart 3ds Max you should see a number of new modifiers in the modifier pull-down. Each name of the new modifier starts with "A" (e.g. "APush"). There will also be a new category in the object creation panel called "Max Creation Graph" with several new tools.

I have also created a sample test file that you can load once you unzip the tools and restart 3ds Max here: MCGSampleTestScene.zip

Your comments and questions are certainly appreciated, enjoy!

I unpack in the userprofile and it doesn't work. When I try to open the example file i get loads of error of missing component... should we add this path to our plugin.usersetting.ini or something?

I'm learning an incredible amount from these examples. I'm sure I'll find an 'if' statement soon. What I do not see in the geometry examples is the "Click and drag to begin creation process" that is shown at the bottom of the screen when creating objects. Do you have any samples of how to have the user drag to set a vector for size/direction? Thanks so much for these, they are very helpful!

Thanks for the pack Chris! I have some problems with the Clone Modifier though. Currently the offset value is limited to 100. Even if I change the min/max values in the pos node, nothing happens. Is it possible to make a modifier with bigger values? Thanks, A. --- OK, I made my own version with the different parameters. I guess the way you combine the pos/rot/scale doesen`t allow the funcion I needed. :/

Thank you for the useful examples! Though I think that there is a problem with the normals when creating a symmetrical object using ASymmetry modifier... can you please verify. (i am new and i am trying to recreate the flip normal modifier but still nothing :D. any hint is welcome!) I created a mirroring compound but its really useful for tris and quads. You can find it here http://www.scriptspot.com/3ds-max/mcg/quad-mirror Any comment for improvement is welcome.

Thanks Christopher! Really enjoying messing around with the MCG so far. I've got the same question as onikami but for compounds rather than utilities - once you save a .maxcompound file, where does it appear so you can use it in other maxtools? Thanks for the hard work

onikami When you create a utility object it appears as a MAXScript utility in the utility panel.. You have to click the "MAXScript" button and choose the pull down. See: http://knowledge.autodesk.com/search-result/caas/CloudHelp/cloudhelp/2015/ENU/MAXScript-Help/files/GUID-9BA10055-A4EA-4F2B-B356-8C41FCFC86A2-htm.html erwinf I assume you have 3ds Max 2016. 1) Download the zip file from http://area.autodesk.com/userdata/blogs/chris/MaxCreationGraph.zip 2) open the folder "%userprofile%/Autodesk/3ds Max 2016/Max Creation Graph" in your windows explorer. 3) unzip the zip file into the specified folder. 4) restart 3ds Max.
