Invalid flout button ID! – Startup Error.

Some users have reported the following Error dialog on startup of 3ds Max 2012 or 3ds Max Design 2012-

The error can be closed after clicking OK in the dialog box a couple of time. 3ds Max will then appear to startup as normal.

Mass FX Toolbar display issue.

After closing the error window and starting 3ds Max, everything appears fine. However, the Mass FX Toolbar may not display as expected after choosing Right-Click>Mass FX Toolbar on the Toolbar to open it. The Mass FX Toolbar may open, but the button icons may not display correctly-

This issue is due to a problem in corruption of the 3ds Max- MaxStartUI.cui configuration file. This configuration file stores information on the User Interface for 3ds Max which is loaded on startup. If the file is corrupted, it may lead to startup errors and some interface elements not displaying correctly. Possible causes for the issue may include either running with user configuration files from a previous Beta install of 3ds Max or damaged installation. To resolve the issue, the MaxStartUI.cui configuration file should be reset following the steps below-

1/ Close 3ds Max 2012 or 3ds Max Design 2012
2/ In Windows Explorer, go to Tools>Folder Options>View - Turn on 'Show hidden files, folders, or drives' 3/ In Windows Explorer, Browse to directory listed below. Note: Directory will vary depending on which release of 3ds Max is installed on your system-

Windows XP

C:\Documents and Settings\YOUR_USER_NAME\Local Settings\Application Data\Autodesk\ 3dsMax\ 2012 - 64bit\enu\UI
C:\Documents and Settings\YOUR_USER_NAME\Local Settings\Application Data\Autodesk\ 3dsMax\ 2012 - 32bit\enu\UI
C:\Documents and Settings\YOUR_USER_NAME\Local Settings\Application Data\Autodesk\ 3dsMaxDesign\ 2012 - 64bit\enu\UI
C:\Documents and Settings\YOUR_USER_NAME\Local Settings\Application Data\Autodesk\ 3dsMaxDesign\ 2012 - 32bit\enu\UI

Windows 7

C:\Users\YOUR_USER_NAME\AppData\Local\Autodesk\ 3dsMax\ 2012 - 64bit\enu\UI
C:\Users\YOUR_USER_NAME\AppData\Local\Autodesk\ 3dsMax\ 2012 - 32bit\enu\UI
C:\Users\YOUR_USER_NAME\AppData\Local\Autodesk\ 3dsMaxDesign\ 2012 - 64bit\enu\UI
C:\Users\YOUR_USER_NAME\AppData\Local\Autodesk\ 3dsMaxDesign\ 2012 - 32bit\enu\UI

4/ This directory stores the local user application configuration files for the 3ds Max user interface.
5/ Rename the MaxStartUI.cui configuration file to OLD_MaxStartUI.cui
6/ Restart 3ds Max 2012 or 3ds Max Design 2012. New default MaxStartUI.cui config file will be created on startup. The startup error should be resolved and the Mass FX Toolbar can be docked on the main Toolbar as expected-

This worked for me... using the UIdefault switcher and switched back to default, relauanched max and then, using the same porcedure, using default swithcer under customize menu, set to MentalRay & amedark. Relaunched max with out any errors.

This error kept flagging up on our version of 2013 too. I followed the instructions given but could not find the MaxStartUI.cui configuration but instead renamed the 3dsmax config setup to OLD_3dsmax and also renamed the Plugin.UserSettings conf setup to Old_plugin.usersettings config. Once max restarts it creates new files of these. This seemed to resolve the path issues which kept coming up. Once I restarted max I then did as Ant_K states above by reseting the default UI and then restarted. Programme seems to work perfectly now.

I too encountered this problem after installing 3dsmax design 2013 and then installing sp6. Once I changed the UI, manually to amedark the error popped up. I tried the approach to fix, located at the top of this page. It didnt work. I tried again using the UIdefault switcher and switched back to default, relauanched max and then, using the same porcedure, using default swithcer under customize menu, set to MentalRay & amedark. Relaunched max with out any errors. Hope this will help someone. Cheers! Andy

ENU/EN-US/UI is what I am assuming you would be looking for. renaming any files OLD_...... did not work. a file search for MaxStartUI.cui resulted in nothing but what I typed up did.

@aileen lee.........load 3d Max, when you get the error message click ok until it disappears. After you get to your screen go to the top and click on the drag down box & select the load custom UI scheme....when it opens the menus up select the DefaultUI.ui....it will state it will next time you restart........then restart 3d Max and that should clear it up......that worked for me.

Could also be caused by copying the ui files from a previous release of Max. This is is not advisable as it causes more problems than it fixes. Anyone wanting the ability to import prefs from earlier versions should visit https://autodesk.uservoice.com/forums/80695-publicgeneralfeaturerequests (search for "import preferences") and vote for it.
