Adobe After Effects Live Link

By area-team - Mar 15, 2021

This plugin provides a live link between Maya and Adobe ® After Effects ® allowing you to view a scene in both applications simultaneously, as well as perform changes in Maya and see them update in After Effects in real-time.

This plug-in is available on Adobe ExchangeIf you are unable to install this plugin via Adobe Exchange - you can install this plugin manually by downloading this plugin here on AREA and following the instructions below.

Instructions for manual installation:

  • Unzip and copy the com.autodeskmaya.livelink directory to:
  • Win: C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe\CEP\extensions
  • Mac: /Library/Application Support/Adobe/CEP/extensions
  • *Note that administrator permissions are required to access these folders.

Compatible elements include:

  • Cameras (including TransformsFocal Length / ApertureZoom)
  • Spot, Point, and Ambient Lights (including TransformsIntensityColorCone)
  • Groups (converted to Nulls)
  • Locators (including Transforms)
  • Planes (to adjust size, scale a 1x1 plane. Do not use Width / Height).
  • Meshes (converted to Solids)

And the data exported includes:

  • Position
  • Rotation
  • Scale
  • Intensity, Cone Angle, and Color (for lights)

To set up a link

  1. Open both Maya and Adobe® After Effects® .
  2. In After Effects, go to Window > Extensions > Autodesk Maya Live Link.
  3. In Maya, go to File > Adobe® After Effects® Live Link.
  4. Click Link All to link all compatible scene elements to After Effects, or middle-drag specific elements from the Outliner into the Specific objects field and then click Link Specified.
  5. After Effects loads the Maya scene into its current composition. Further changes to the Maya scene will automatically update in After Effects unless the link is broken.

I got the Mayalink to work with: Maya 2020 and After Effects 2022 on a pc By following the steps from below ie editing the manifest.xml and adding the value PlayerDebugMode to CSXS.10 in the registry it didn't work. So I added the same PlayerDebugMode value to CSXS.11 and it worked. This was pure guess work, so modify at your own risk as I dont know if this will cause problems further down the line, but I thought I'd share it. May work with Maya2022 if its set to Python 2, but I haven't tested it.

Please update. Now that the latest AE supports multi-frame processing it's pretty critical this works with the latest AE version. I tried the fix suggested by @Wilhelm Landt and it doesn't seem to work on AE 22.0.0. Perhaps I did something wrong but pretty sure I followed the steps exactly.

Are you guys ever going to update this for new After Effects, you know ones newer than 2019? It would be nice to use this again and not have to have 2 installs of After Effects on my machine just to use this.

@Wilhelm Landt nice!!!! I can use it!!

When is this plugin going to be updated, i see a lot a people crying out for this. Can you and adobe sort it. we're paying a lot of money for this software. Maya/Adobe dead link...

Ok so if you install the latest AE 2020 version (not 2021), it works with Chris Gelles solution. Thanks Chris!

Can you state with what version of After Effects this should be installed with?? I am doing all the workarounds below and the plugin window is not opening.

I made some tests with camera tracking coming from after effect and exporting the data to Maya. There are some corrupts data inside the tracking I can't explain (and precisely described), like some wiggling effect Has somoene experience such an issue ?

I did all the stuff that you can. But I see the AE live link inside the window extensions in AE, but I can't see the window of the plugin. I have MacOS BigSur, AE v18.2 and Maya 2020

And is not working on new After Effects again! Ow Lord!!! :(, trying Wilhelm workaround, but interpreted for OS X. EDIT: So, I understand what Wilhelm did, and translate to OS X version, here what you need to do: Open (Macintosh Disk)/Library/Application Support/Adobe/CEP/extensions/com.autodeskmaya.livelink/CSXS File Manifest.XML Edit line: <Host Name="AEFT" Version="[13.0,16.9]"/> With: <Host Name="AEFT" Version="[13.0,18.2.1]"/> (or put the version you are using there (18.2.1), is mine.) Them open After Effects. Voilá.

I couldn't get this to work. However, I dug up an old ZXP I had saved. Using ZXP Installer, Link: I was able to get it working again. It seems every Adobe update breaks my installation. So, I need to re-install the old-fashioned way. If anyone is having trouble with the steps above, I have "Autodesk Maya Live Link_1.0.1" available via this Dropbox link:

It works as described by Felipe lega, just make sure to only change the After Effects version to [13.0,99.9] on C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe\CEP\extensions\com.autodeskmaya.livelink\CSXS and disregard any marks such as &lt on Felipe's comment which is a translation error from this comment box that doesn't allow quotation marks to be properly displayed. Also I didn't even need to change the value to 1 on regedit as it was already marked as 1. Then just run maya on python 2 from the command line like this and it should work: c:\"program files"\Autodesk\Maya2022\bin\maya.exe -pythonver 2"

Unfortunately not working for me. There is a Standard and LogLevel entry in the registry. What's with them? Delete?

It worked for me on Maya 2022 and in After effects 2021 I did both Steps from Willhelm Landt and Matt Rutenbar: ----Step one: ----C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe\CEP\extensions\com.autodeskmaya.livelink\CSXS ----find the line where the ae version ist listed and replace the line with: ----<Host Name="AEFT" Version="[13.0,99.9]"/> ----2. open regedit and under \HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Adobe\CSXS.10 ----add a value called ---PlayerDebugMode--- and set it to 1. ----restart AE CC2021 and voila, maya live link is loading and shows up... hope this helps. (btw. this comment editor cant show up quotation marks...) ----STEP 2: I believe if you launch Maya 2022 with python 2 you can get it to work. Seems to be working for me. See here for how to do that: Do both and it should work fine.

Hi all, i have managed to get the extension work also in AE CC 2021. 1. you have to modify the ---manifest.xml--- (located in C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe\CEP\extensions\com.autodeskmaya.livelink\CSXS find the line where the ae version ist listed and replace the line with: <Host Name="AEFT" Version="[13.0,99.9]"/> 2. open regedit and under \HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Adobe\CSXS.10 add a value called ---PlayerDebugMode--- and set it to 1. restart AE CC2021 and voila, maya live link is loading and shows up... hope this helps. (btw. this comment editor cant show up quotation marks...)

The exchange lists this extension as not compatible. When attempting to install using these instructions, nothing shows up under Windows > Extensions. This is extremely detrimental to our studio, as we are often comping 3D information from Maya with frames within AE. We are using Adobe CC 2021 (tested in both version 18 and 18.1 of After Effects) on Windows 10 and Maya 2020.3.

Thank you so much for sorting this. The Adobe version of this plugin was (and still is) a right PitA, i could never get it to install.
