Trying Maya for the first time? New to 3D as a whole? Come and learn the ropes in a fun, interactive tutorial with your own personal tutor, Mayabot!

To use this tutorial

  1. Download and extract the zip file here: https://areadownloads.autodesk.com/wdm/maya/tutorials/interactive_getting_started_basics.ma.zip (see blue button above)
  2. Open Maya 2022.1 or later
  3. Load the file "Interactive_Basics.ma". Note that this is an updated version of the basics tutorial (with identical content) that is included with the software.

(Note: If the tutorial doesn't start right away, try loading the scene file again from within Maya via the File > Open Scene menu)

Interactive tutorials are a brand new way to learn right inside of Maya itself. Just load the tutorial and follow the story. Perform tasks right inside the UI as Mayabot asks you to in order to move further along towards the end. It's a fun, gaming-inspired approach to learning!

This doesn't actually work with Maya 2022

Note that these are a new feature for Maya 2022.1 (as mentioned in the description above)

Says the archive is corrupt

Sorry about that (looks like winzip failed me). I've changed the link so it should work now!

I have tried opening this tutorial and some of the others in this program, and they all open with the same error. A MEL function has stopped executing because it doesn't have a full body. Function name: stage Not sure how this is even possible or how you'd go about fixing it, but I'd really like to see what these tutorials have to offer.

@Marcus-Paul Bezerra, are you running Maya 2022.1? If so, try going to Windows > Settings/Preferences > Plug-in Manager and make sure the "Stage" plug-in is activated.

I don't actually see the option to activate a "Stage" plugin. I am definitely running 2022.1.

I would try resetting your preferences (https://youtu.be/HptugoNgwAU) then restarting Maya. If you still don't see the Stage plug-in available, your installation may be borked and needs to be reinstalled.

When loading the tutorial the robot shows up with his arms out. But no prompts to interact with ever appear.

Hoping for a reply

Hi @Jacob Bell, try opening Maya first, then loading the tutorial (don't double-click the scene file in an explorer window to start it). Also, make sure you're running Maya 2022.1.

@Matt Chan Thank you for the reply! This worked in getting the tutorial prompts to appear. Unfortunately the backgrounds in the tutorial scenes do not load, but they are at least functional now. Thanks again.

@Jacob Bell : Ah sorry about that! You'll need "Arnold" to view the scenes in their full shading/lighting. It's part of the default install, but if you skipped it, just run the installer again and choose to add it to the install (you can just install Arnold on its own, no need to reinstall Maya again).

This one worked great out of the Maya Help menu! Thanks Matt!
