Are you a first time modeler looking to learn the basics? Then join our virtual mentor, Mayabot, in this interactive lesson focused on building a strong foundation in both technical modeling and sculpting!

To use this tutorial:

  1. Download and extract this zip file: https://areadownloads.autodesk.com/wdm/maya/tutorials/interactive_modeling.ma.zip (see blue button above)
  2. Open Maya 2022.1 or later
  3. Load the file "Interactive_Modeling.ma".

(Note: If the tutorial doesn't start right away, try loading the scene file again from within Maya via the File > Open Scene menu)

Interactive tutorials are a brand new way to learn right inside of Maya itself. Just load the tutorial and follow the story. Perform tasks right inside the UI as Mayabot asks you to in order to move further along towards the end. It's a fun, gaming-inspired approach to learning!

hi matt, thanks for the tutorial. i share my experience with the modeling tutorial in my youtube channel. just for your info: Maya: Interactive Tutorials [New in Maya 2022.1] https://youtu.be/r0fGD30eL6E

Nice intro video but nothing happens when you open the project up in Maya. Well, the elements light up in different orders and then nothing. It just sits there. There isn't a "click here to continue" or anything like that. No idea where to "tumble in" (etc) to start any scripting, just a still though pretty, cityscape on the screen. The readme doesn't have anything. Sad cause I liked your other tutorial about how to use the tumble/ dolly etc. I just need a tutorial to cover the grid system and measuring items cause there's nothing helpful for a newbie out there on that.

This website isn't allowing me to edit my last comment nor delete it. No matter. I really liked your intro interactive tutorial and I'm working through this one now. It does work but ONLY if you open up Maya first and choose "open" from the main menu. It will not load from Windows Explorer properly (ie it loads but no intractability or scripting beyond a light show).

So I'm following the steps to "construct" something and when it comes to step 41, I duplicated the model, and then the tutorial just stops working, also there's an error below the MAYA that says: "Error: IndexError: file stage43.onActivateScript line 16: list index out of range" I just don't know how to fix it, plz someone help me!

@shu James: Looks like you found a bug! Once you've moved the second cylinder into place, try deselecting and re-selecting it and that should allow you to proceed. I'm going to update the scene file to fix this as well.

Hi. Me and my students are running into problems on step 41 of the modeling tutorial. After cloning the shape with shift and move it into place it does not allow to advance to the next step. and others wont advance past step 42 . Is this a bug ?

@Matt Brooks, I did fix a bug related to that about 12 days ago (see the comment above yours). Can you try re-downloading the zip file and trying again? Failing that, try switching your selection between the two objects after moving the duplicate. The original bug was related to the fact that the tutorial only checked the position of the duplicate whenever the current selection changed, so doing that can jump-start the trigger.

hi.thanks for the tutorial.I have two problems now, (1) When I open the file, it is displayed that the reference cannot be found. (2) The explanation of Mayabot does not start. What should I do...

@mayuri, Try loading up Maya first, then open the tutorial from inside the software.

I’m grateful for your guidance!

When I open the file my camera is glitching. It doesn't center on the Mayabot and is making my tracking highly sensitive. Everytime I get to a new step the camera "recenters" but its always down to the left of where you need the camera centered.

Hi @Michael, that's a new one for me. Have you tried resetting Maya back to default preferences first? https://youtu.be/HptugoNgwAU It could be that there's some camera setting that's out of whack.

This is a really cool idea I hate watching youtube to learn this stuff, for some reason I get no picture on the step to shrink the bottom cylinder so I cant continue

Thanks for the tutorials, Matt. I am on Maya 2022.1 and I got stuck at step 41 after duplicating the cylinder. Cannot click on the Next button. Here is a screenshot: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1VRqJD7lEmUzAw36kxPY28Y4dJqr14YD1/view?usp=sharing

Like Kane mentioned, there seem to be images missing, even in the earlier steps. Check it out: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1VahROwrd-iJJy_DirzJsaadles1t9fv7/view?usp=sharing

@Kane @David Very strange. I just checked the zip archive and the images are in there (you can find them in the dep/sourceimages folder). It seems like it might not be referencing them correctly on your machines for some reason. I'll look into it, but in the meantime you can try just looking at the images directly in the folder for those steps.

@Kane @David Those missing images are actually from the installer - not sure why they're missing in your build (seems that folder might not be in the right spot in the install directory?). Regarding that step that doesn't progress, I had fixed that recently (or thought I had). Try positioning the cylinders like Mayabot shows, then change your selection between the two cylinders a few times. That should "dislodge" it (I'll have to look into why my fix didn't work).

@Matt I made it past the Cylinders with some finessing, but got stuck again when asked for the Asset Browser for the sculpture. It didn't pop up in time I think, and I hit the next button before I should have, and at that point all I could do was hit next (should there be a Back button? or at least some checkpoints to go back to?) and the tutorial was broken.
