My name is Rodolfo Galvez and I live in Chile. I was introduced to Maya when I was 18 in a marketing class and I fell in love with it immediately. It was the same year that my town was hit by an 8.8 Richter scale earthquake which devasted most of the town. It was a struggle to educate myself further in 3D with so much chaos going on around me. Because the education I had received from my school was limited, I had to find ways to teach myself the best workflows and techniques, mostly through friends and the internet.
I slowly started getting better at modelling, lighting and environments, and I was able to get a few different jobs for national and international companies. Working with real clients was a valuable lesson in how to translate someone else’s concept into an actual 3D image.
I started experimenting with photogrammetry workflows, specifically using some free assets from Quixel Megascans. By random chance, someone from Quixel came across my portfolio and offered me some freelance work.
Today, I am 28 years old and I work full time as an artist for Quixel out of my hometown in Chile. I find the combination of Maya and photogrammetry assets like those offered by Megascans, to be an incredibly powerful combination that can quickly transform images in my head into photorealistic renders. This gives me more time to focus on lighting and composition.
The Autodesk suite, specifically Autodesk Maya and Autodesk Mudbox have become indispensable tools in my workflow, and I find them user-friendly and easy to understand. I have managed to create my own style, workflows and shortcuts, but every day I continue to learn something new which is why working in 3D is so exciting.
Every day, I am inspired by movies, video games and the real world around me to create new art.
I want to continue to perfect my skills and I hope to be able to help others to do the same. I don't know what awaits me in the future, but I'm hoping for the best.
